Pupils at Ramsey Grammar School are researching all the people from the Isle of Man who died in the First World War.
As part of the school’s Armistice Week commemorations each pupil will be given a piece of red ribbon and a name of a Manx serviceman or woman who died in the First World War.
There were 1,165 individuals in total.
Each member of staff, along with friends of RGS such as governors, will also get a name and a piece of ribbon.
At certain times during the Armistice Week students and staff will be asked to write their person’s name on the ribbon and tie the ribbon on to the wire around the tennis court, which is opposite the school’s west building.
All students and staff will also have the opportunity to look for their named person on the Royal British Legion ’Every One Remembered’ website and leave a message.
At 11am on the November 9 all students and staff will stop work and remember that the First World War ended 100 years ago.
Trumpeters will play the last post and friends of the school will tie their ribbons outside.
During the week, pupils will all receive a commemorative 50p as part of a government initiative.
In addition, the children will have the opportunity to watch Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old film, help to design a display showing a 100 soldiers from the north of the island with 100 poppies, look for five ’There but not There’ silhouettes that will be randomly displayed around school and attend special assemblies.
Individual school departments will be encouraged to do special lessons linked to the First World War.
Head teacher Annette Baker said ’This is a one-off opportunity for students and staff to remember the men and women of the Island who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War.
’We hope that the Ramsey Grammar school family will remember this event with gratitude for many years to come.’
