A pupil from Ballakermeen High School in Douglas has achieved a magnificent five A* grades and six A grades in her GCSEs after battling back from a potentially life threatening illness.

Rebecca Kewley, aged 16, from Onchan, got the five A* grades in English language, English literature, additional science, French and business studies.

This was despite suffering from a brain tumour when she was 13.

Rebecca said after receiving her grades: ’I am quite shocked actually, with French especially, but all of them really.’

The teenager was diagnosed with a brain tumour after a visit to her opticians in 2014.

The optician said that she had a swollen optic nerve and Rebecca was sent to the accident and emergency department at Noble’s Hospital in Braddan..

After a visit to an eye clinic she was taken by air ambulance to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool

She underwent two operations and was off school for three weeks.

Rebecca said: ’I just forget about it now.’
