A lettuce next to a grubby mop, a delivery of yoghurt and fresh fruit left on the kitchen floor, plastic cups stacked on a filthy tea towel next to a spatula entwined with dirty string.
These pictures, apparently showing less-than-hygienic conditions, were taken in the kitchen at Braddan School.
When they were shown the images, educations chiefs took immediate action and said environment health officers would be called in to inspect the school kitchen.
The photographs were supplied by an upset parent who told the Examiner she had complained to staff many times about what she believed was ’unacceptable’ standards of hygiene in the kitchen, where the pupils’ lunches are prepared.
She said: ’I was horrified and unhappy that this was still going on.
’The children’s drinking cups and trays they eat off were sitting on a tea towel drenched in liquid from what looks like defrosting ready meals. And there is fresh fruit with them.
’That has to be a serious cross-contamination failure. I was also disgusted by what I saw on the floor next to a bucket and mop that looks like it hasn’t been washed in weeks.
’It is seriously making me very anxious and concerned. It is a matter of urgency and can no longer be brushed under the carpet.
’I do hope this isn’t the standard in all our island’s schools.’
Hygiene
In a statement, the Department for Education, Sport and Culture, said: ’We expect a very high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in our schools and will not tolerate anything that drops below that standard. Immediate action was taken to address issues highlighted in the photos.
’Environmental Health officers have been asked to inspect the school kitchen to ensure the facility is well kept and meets all necessary standards.
’Parents and staff can be assured steps have been taken to ensure high standards are maintained in all school kitchens.’
The primary school meals service is currently transferring to the Department of Education, Sport and Culture.
