Students from University College Isle of Man’s hair and beauty department will recreate hairstyles and fashion from the golden age of Hollywood on Thursday morning.

The theme this year has been chosen to coincide with the launch of the Manx Museum’s new interactive gallery ’Theatreland’

As part of their course training this year students have been exploring hairstyles and fashions from 1930s-1950s Hollywood.

Taking inspiration from such fashion icons as Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

The students have also been learning about the cinema and entertainment complexes on the Isle of Man during this time.

They will be putting their skills into practice during the event, with students styling models using a variety of complicated hair techniques.

The styling challenge will take place in the iMuseum and visitors are invited to go and watch the students style their models and chat to them about how they achieve the vintage look.

Once fully styled, the students and their models will move to the Manx Museum for a photoshoot in the ’Theatreland’ gallery.

This will be the seventh year that students from the UCM have recreated vintage hair and fashion with Manx National Heritage.

Katie King, community learning officer for Manx National Heritage, said: ’This year’s theme has proven very popular with the students and they have enjoyed researching the stars from the period. Some of the students have also chosen to consider the contrasts between Hollywood in the 1930s and Hollywood in 2018, and have chosen to reflect the #MeToo campaign through their style challenge.’

Lindsey Jackson, hair and beauty assistant programme manager for UCM, said: ’Our students have really enjoyed the challenge of re-creating the styles from vintage Hollywood, but we have been using modern techniques and equipment. We are all really looking forward to the event!"

Visitors are invited to the iMuseum from 10am - noon on Thursday (March 29) to watch the live styling event or to visit the Manx Museum at 12.30pm to watch the fashion show and photo shoot.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
