International storyteller Mara Menzies will be visiting Ramsey Grammar School to help students develop their spoken communication skills.

The Scots-Kenyan storyteller recently performed a sell-out show at StoryFest 2018 in Singapore.

Teacher Gwyn Davies said: ’Mara’s visit is a fantastic opportunity for the students to hear stories and different perspectives of Africa and those of our Celtic cousins in Scotland.

’This will broaden their world view and provide a creative way to work on developing their skills and confidence in spoken communication.’

During her visit Mara will perform to students that will be moving up to RGS in September.

The aim is to develop their confidence in speaking and thinking about big ideas at secondary school.

And she will work with year eight students (ages 12 and 13) in workshops looking at story-telling and the power of the spoken word.

Mr Davies said: ’The skills of oracy play an important part in developing the ’student voice’, allowing students to articulate their views, and consolidate presentation skill within the curriculum and the pastoral setting.

He added: ’We are delighted Mara has been able to come to the Isle of Man.

’She has performed around the world and it will be wonderful to have someone of her skill and renown work with students at RGS.’

’Embedding these skills dovetails with the Assessment for Learning Framework at RGS that seeks to create confident self-regulated learners who will leave school as well prepared and capable life-long learners.’

Mara has performed and led workshops around the world including Kenya, Singapore, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, the USA and across the UK.
