University College Isle of Man is looking for volunteers who would like to help adult learners to improve their skills in everyday English and maths.
Steve Jones, coordinator of UCM’s adult literacy and numeracy classes, said: ’This is a unique programme where we provide students with one-to-one support, tailored to their needs, where they learn at their own pace.
’We have helped a great number of students over the years. We do, however, need more volunteers to be able to continue this valuable service in the future.’
Volunteer tutors are not required to have any previous experience, as they will be trained and guided by experienced class coordinators, who the volunteers will have access to at any time during these sessions.
Mr Jones added: ’We are looking for people who are good communicators, who are empathetic and who are enthusiastic about helping others.
’To introduce potential new tutors to the programme, we hold training events throughout the year, to explain how the programme works, to discuss the support and resources available, and to introduce tutors to some of the qualifications that our students may wish to work towards.’
Those who are interested in volunteering to teach English and/or maths, and who are available in the areas of Douglas or Ramsey on Wednesday evenings or Castletown on Thursday evenings, can contact UCM on 648200 or email: [email protected]
