The water pressure of the island’s reservoirs and the chemical properties of the Laxey mines were just some of the topics under the microscope at Queen Elizabeth II High School’s science fair.

The event was the culmination of two weeks’ work by students in year nine (ages 13 and 14).

It saw the youngsters work in groups to develop a project on the theme of ’2018 Year of Our Island’.

The work will go towards their bronze level CREST awards, which are accredited by the British Science Association.

The skills-based accreditation scheme requires students to demonstrate they have used key scientific skills and worked towards solving or discussing a real-world problem or issue.

Bradley Lee and Harrison Kirk won the head teacher’s award with their research on the water pressure of Manx reservoirs.

The Isle of Man Engineering Group award, externally judged by the Isle of Man Engineering Group, went to Aislinn Lace and Lisa McMullin.

They looked at whether residents should be drinking milk produced in the island.

MLC Tanya August-Hanson chose the winner of the 2018 Year of Our Island award.

Aneurin Skillen, Matthew Cooil, Mackenzie Brown, Max Yates and Leo Taylor were the winners with a project on biofuels.

The people’s choice award went to Gerard Paguntalan, Lorenz Loi Freno and Timmy Phillips, for their display on animals in the island.

And Elsie Hyett and Hannah James were twice runners up with a project about how currents at the Sound affect the environment.
