Pupils from Onchan School picked up litter in the village’s community park area after they were shocked to see the amount of rubbish lying around.

As this is a communal place which is used not only by them but by their families, the local nursery and the whol community they decided to take action as a whole school.

The school’s Eco Warriors Club decided that one way to improve the area would be if each week a different class went over to the park to complete a litter pick.

They do so under adult supervision.

Teacher Victoria Cubbon said: ’This task is very important to our school as it supports our school curriculum aimed at being responsible citizens, being aware of their role in the environment and keeping our area litter free.

’This is also one of our Isle of Man "eco school" topics endorsed by Department of Education, Sport and Culture.

’We hope by doing this, we see a big improvement in the amount of litter that is in this area and further help promote our children growing into responsible young people.’
