A stroke survivor raised £11,700 for the Manx Stroke Foundation by taking part in the Parish Walk.
Edward Kelly, aged 38 and from Onchan, suffered a severe stroke at 21 years old and despite a miraculous recovery, walking even a few yards requires every ounce of his energy and determination.
In this year’s Parish Walk he walked almost two miles from the start at the NSC to Braddan using his walking frame, which he calls ’Roy Walker’ after the former Catchphrase host.
The event organisers allowed Edward to walk across the finish line in Douglas.
Edward said: ’It was an unforgettable experience that made all the time and effort worthwhile.’
After his stroke in 2002 Edward was initially left paralysed from the neck down. Now he’s able to walk using a crutch.
He thanked everyone who made a donation, adding: ’Special thanks goes to the Manx Telecom Parish Walk committee for their support, Chris Cale from Up and Running for helping select appropriate footwear, Kate Stobart from Rehablab physiotherapy for performing acupuncture for pain relief, my physio Janet Lawrinson for ongoing support, my work colleagues at RL360 who raised over £2,000, to my wonderful support crew Lesley Patterson, Olivia Newstead and Nick Shimmin, and even to the real life Roy Walker who sent kind words!’
The Foundation runs a weekly Stroke Art Group and a fortnightly Stroke Club. Financial support is also given to stroke research, training for health and therapy professionals and support for the local hospital.
