Elderly people who suffer with memory problems performed with children at a carol concert that took place at Braddan Church last week.
The ’Forget Me Notes’ Memory Choir, which was set up by members of the Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS), was supported by Anagh Coar School Choir during the Christmas event.
Julie Perry, a OPMHS worker who helps manage the memory choir, was overwhelmed by the response on the night.
’It was absolutely brilliant,’ she said. ’The whole church was filled and the kids thoroughly enjoyed the event.
’This is the first time we’ve had school children sing with the memory choir. They were very kind to the elderly people, making them tea and seeing if they were all right. It worked well,’ she added.
The choir was established as part of the Memory Clinic, which will mark its 20th anniversary in March, where the Forget Me Notes will give a special performance.
’Andrea Marsden, Lorraine O’Sullivan and I created the ’Forget Me Notes’ four years ago,’ Julie continued.
’After a year of setting up the group we started to get regular members and it just took off from there. The choir helps users remember songs from the old days, which brings back memories from the past.
’Our 20 to 25 members meet every first Tuesday of the month at 2pm in Braddan Church and anyone with memory problems are welcome to join.
’We have people come from Ramsey, who get on the bus, and others from Douglas,’ she said.
Members of the Forget Me Notes would like thank the children from Anagh Coar School choir who sang carols on the night along with their Choir Leader, Helen Mellon, and those who attended the event.
