A Castle View nursing home resident marked her 104th birthday with singing, dancing and champagne while in lockdown.
Elizabeth Kissack received many congratulations on reaching the impressive age on Saturday from care staff and residents at the Peel home as well as a special bagpipe performance and a Skype call from family across the world.
Due to pandemic measures, John Shakespeare played bagpipes from the gardens while those inside the nursing home watched on from inside.
Elizabeth, who is originally from Bristol, gave a toast ’to old age and having a jolly good one’ with her friends joining her in singing and dancing to songs by American actress Doris Day.
She called herself ’very lucky’ to reach the milestone age.
’I have been hidden away from Covid,’ she said. ’This is a war! We are fighting something we cannot see. We must listen to our leaders and help them to complete the mission they have set out.’
Having lived in many countries with her father’s family being Scottish and her mother’s family being Norwegian, Elizabeth has lived a very cultured life.
She said: ’I married my [late] husband Reginald Kissack, known as Rex in July 1938. Rex was a Methodist minister which meant I was kept busy.
’Rex and I had two children, John and Christie. I am a teacher by trade, however. I travelled all around the world living in a lot of different places.
’Rex and I lived in Rome for 10 years where I became the World President of Women’s Methodist Church. I was also lucky enough to meet the Pope.’
She added: ’I am blessed with a big family who live all over the world, from America to Spain to Scotland and of course the Isle of Man.’
The pair settled in the Isle of Man after taking a position to serve in Laxey with Mr Kissack taking on the role of Chaplain to the House of Keys from 1981 to 1986.
Elizabeth moved into the nursing home in 2013.
Castle View’s health and well-being coordinator, Hannah Cowin, said: ’Elizabeth is a very interesting and well-cultured women. I love listening to the stories she tells about her life.
’She is very artistic and loves painting with watercolours. Elizabeth is very proud of her art work and even has a gallery in the corridor outside her room for others to enjoy.’
She said Elizabeth is a ’very friendly lady’ who ’enjoys sitting laughing with others’.
