Families enjoyed a wet and muddy afternoon exploring the wetlands area of The Children’s Centre’s Community Farm in Braddan.

The Wetland Wanderings event took place on Saturday afternoon and was led by Manx Wildlife Trust’s biodiversity education officer Dawn Dickens.

Participants donned their wellies to head out on to the farm’s boardwalks and explore the wetlands area on foot.

All the children were given sample tubes so they could collect bog water and peat water.

Back in the warmth of the farmhouse, they took a close look at their samples under the microscope.

Different algae and even freshwater shrimp were found.

The children also learned about the properties of another wetland plant, moss - including the fact that it grows 1cm a year and was long used on battlefields to wrap wounds as it is very absorbent.

Children found this out for themselves by squeezing the water out of moss.

The event was organised as part of MWT’s Wildlife Watch Club.

Wildlife Watch is MWT’s junior branch for children aged six to 16.
