The Family Library is an important social and literary resource for schools, adults and the wider island community, based at Westmoreland Road in Douglas.
School’s out, summer is here and what a busy time it’s proving to be since we re-opened our doors.
Not only has it been great to see everyone again in person, but the Family Library has truly been a hive of activity, even before we launched our summer reading challenge last weekend!
As well as holding some of our regular classes online, we’ve welcomed more than 350 children and staff from Henry Bloom Noble School over three days - 14 class visits in total - along with some familiar faces and new visitors.
Just in time too as we have a host of new releases for you to enjoy ranging from ’The Great Pants Robbery’ and ’The Funniest Animal Joke Book Ever’ to ’Dream Team Attack of the Heebie Jeebies’ and ’Cookie! And the Most Annoying Boy in the World’, written by former BBC Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq.
There are so many fun titles to choose from so pop in and take a look.
Perhaps one of our new titles will grab your imagination in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge: ’Silly Squad’.
We are delighted to have joined forces with the Henry Bloom Noble Library and sponsor PwC for the initiative which encourages primary school-aged children to read six books; alternatively, you can set your own reading goal. As you read, you earn reading badges and unlock a whole range of incentives. The Silly Squad website is interactive, with a "book sorter" which helps with book selection and provides games, ideas and polls.
If you’ve not done so already, come and see us to pick up your own Silly Squad summer reading challenge pack or visit sillysquad.org.uk to register and record your summer reading.

The third in our series of local book reviews features the latest novel from the thriller, crime author Rona Halsall.
She released her fourth novel, One Mistake, in May this year.
In the meantime, stay safe and you can still continue to follow us on Facebook or drop us an email to [email protected]
One Mistake by Rona Halsall is published by Bookouture, priced £7.99 (ebook £2.55). Available now.
Released under the tagline ’how far would you go to protect your happy home?’, Rona Halsall’s fifth book dives into the desperate attempts of Sara to keep her family and household together after a series of knockbacks.
After her husband Matt is made redundant, Sara feels her world around her threatened.
After taking on a part time job with a charity, she finds herself confronted with a seemingly easy and innocent decision to make - one that she knows is wrong but something that she justifies to herself that she will sort out before it is discovered.
It is one mistake she makes that haunts her and follows her through the next few months, as she desperately fights to keep her husband and son Ezra safe.
Manx author Rona has crafted another fast-paced and slick psychological thriller that will keep readers on the edge of the seats while they rip through the pages.
Although this is a slight slow-burner of a novel, you will soon grow to appreciate the care in which Rona has crafted Sara’s world and then the speed in which it is taken away from her.
Readers will enjoy picking apart the twisted and complex tale, muddied by a web of lies, double-crossing and deciet, while waiting for the inevitable twist at the end, something which Rona has made into a trademark of hers in her previous books.
It may be a quick read, but it is also a fun and rewarding one.
