The nephew of a Manx soldier who was killed in Italy during the Second World War has been found, following an article calling for family history information in the Manx Independent.

The request for information was made by Richard Radcliffe of Ramsey, who had discovered a picture of a John Corris’s grave in Minturno, near Monte Cassino, among his father’s wartime photographs.

Mr Radcliffe’s research discovered that Corris was from the west of the island, and had a brother named Caesar, who had fought in the same area.

Caesar Corris’s son, who is also named John Corris after the uncle he never got to meet, soon got in contact with the Manx Independent.

He said that his father had taken a similar picture of the grave before the site was recaptured by the Germans, and that five years ago he visited the grave to pay his respects along with his wife and daughter Alison, who married an Italian and lives in Tuscany.

We were able to provide Mr Radcliffe with his contact information, so that he can share with Mr Corris the photographs of his late uncle.
