The Manx Blind Welfare Society will host its very first ’blind driving’ event next month as part of the 2018 Vision Awareness Week.
It will involve people with full vision wearing a blindfold while driving in order to gain a taste of what life is like without sight.
The afternoon on Sunday, September 16, at Onchan raceway will see fully-visioned, visually-impaired and blind people drive around the track in a dual-controlled car.
MBWS volunteers’ coordinator and events organiser Debbie Thomson said: ’Our blind driving event is shaping up to be an unforgettable finale to Vision Awareness Week and we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Onchan Raceway.
’This event will give blind and visually impaired people an opportunity to drive and give sighted people an insight into the everyday challenges faced by those with limited or no vision.
’Spaces are limited and we have had a lot of interest already so anyone that would like to get involved is encouraged to get in touch sooner rather than later. Slots are for 15 minutes from noon.’
The car that will be used during the event is a manual that has dual controls. Individuals that wish to partake must be 18 years of age or older, but a full driving licence will not be required.
All of the proceeds will be directed to the Manx Blind Welfare Society, which is an independent charity that relies on fundraising, donations and legacies to help care for and support about 600 visually-impaired people in the Isle of Man.
The event is designed to publicise some of the challenges that people face everyday when they don’t have their sight.
The afternoon will conclude the fifth annual Vision Awareness Week, starting Sunday, September 9.
This year’s theme focuses on children and the importance of regular eye examinations. Other events included in the week involve activities such as a Coast to Coast Walk and the annual Bright for Sight Day.
Entries fro the driving event are free for blind and visually impaired members and £10 for others.
