One of the island’s biggest charity nights returns next month for its fifth year of raising thousands for charity.

Thriller in the Villa, a night that pitches amateurs from across the island against each other in boxing matches set for a sell-out night on October 4.

As the competitors approach their final weeks of training, the two teams - Ramsey and Douglas - met under the same roof for the first time in preparation for the showdown.

Organiser Chris Mooney told the Examiner he expected this year to be even better than last as the popularity of the night continues to grow, leading to this year’s tickets selling out in under 10 minutes. He added: ’In our first year, we were told it would never work.

’But this year sees 30 volunteers from around the island, normal day to day working people who have never boxed before in their lives.

’We have two primary school teachers taking part this year along with two sisters. One is fighting for Douglas one is fighting for Ramsey. We have people from all backgrounds taking part. It just shows the event is for everyone to take part or spectate.’

The 2019 fighters have spent six months training for the nights, preparing themselves both physically and mentally. While the fighters provide the entertainment, the main purpose of Thriller at the Villa is to raise money for Manx charities.

Chris said: ’So far to date this show has raised over £140,000. Most of this goes directly to hospice and about £15,000 has gone to local boxing and kids clubs .

’And this year we have given a local young music band called the Voodoo Bandits a shot to perform in front of 1,000 people, making it their largest crowd they have performed in front of.

’We would like to say massive thank you to Warren Spencer and his company Giggs not only being a previous contender of the show but also becoming this year’s main sponsor.’

The night will be broadcast online and including in a number of pubs across the island.
