Fire crews were called to a property on Groves Road, Douglas, during the early hours of Saturday morning after reports of smoke.

Two major appliances from Douglas Fire Station were mobilised by the Emergency Services Joint Control Room shortly before 2am.

On arrival, crews found the smoke had been caused by food which had been left to burn in a microwave.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear light smoke from the property, with firefighters remaining at the scene for around 30 minutes.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has reminded residents of the importance of taking care when cooking.

Advice includes never leaving cooking unattended and only using containers and utensils labelled as microwave safe.

Metal objects, including foil, cutlery and tin cans, should never be placed inside a microwave.

Residents are also advised to clean the inside of cooking appliances regularly to prevent food or grease building up.

The service also recommends having a working smoke alarm and testing it weekly.
