The National Sports Centre was evacuated this evening (Wednesday) following a fire in the gym changing area.

A number of fire engines attended the scene.

A Department of Education, Sport and Culture spokesman said: ’The National Sports Centre has closed due to a small fire in the gym changing area.

’Everyone was safely evacuated and the fire safely contained and extinguished.

’The pool will open as normal tomorrow, however it is not yet clear when the indoor facilities will reopen.

’The Department of Education, Sport and Culture will provide a further update as information becomes available.

’The Department apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates the public’s understanding.’
