Orrisdale Primitive Chapel in Kirk Michael has hosted its first wedding since 1913.

The bride and groom, Natasha Cannell and Glen Cochrane, are both from Cronk y Voddy.

The small chapel played host to the happy couple and their wedding party, including their five children.

They tied the knot on Saturday, October 30.

Mrs Cochrane said: ’We were lucky really because it had been raining all week, flooding, and then the sun came out on Saturday so actually it was perfect.

’There was no rain or wind, and we got married there at four o’clock.’

Orrisdale Chapel was built in 1843 by Patrick Cannell, only 20 years after Primitive Methodism had first come to the Isle of Man.

The land and materials were donated and it was built by volunteers.

It was then sold to the methodists for £1, and was closed in 2017.

The family who owns the chapel have since been trying to restore it to its former glory, and it officially reopened last year as a non-denominational Christian organisation with a candle-lit Christmas service.

The celebration saw Gordon Clague act as chairman and Pauline Brew at the organ.

As part of the service, the congregation enjoyed readings, poetry and songs by Manx performers.

Jane Kaighin, whose family owns the chapel, said: ’[The chapel] was built by our ancestors, and on the deed it said that once it was closed and no longer used by the methodists, it reverts back to the heirs, the family, so it’s come back to the family.

’We are trying to raise money to restore it. This is important for the benefit of Manx heritage.

’We don’t want to make any financial gain out of it, we are preserving it for the future.

’Most of these chapels have been turned into houses or garages or sheds and this is beautifully preserved.

’So we’re trying to fundraise to keep it as a chapel for the use of the public.’

She described the wedding as ’a magical event in a beautiful setting’ and stressed that the chapel is open for business and available for hire.

She said: ’It’s open for weddings, funerals, christenings, blessings and social events.’
