The £2.3m Castletown flood defence project is progressing well and is on target for completion in early April.

Work completed so far includes the Victoria Road wall, including footpath and copings, and the wall to Qualtroughs Yard.

But the floodgates at Apostles Bridge and at the old slipway adjacent to No. 1 Victoria Road are still to be installed, together with the parapet handrails at the Thirtle Bridge.

The pile cap to the boatyard is complete along with the new slipway and half of the walls to Back Hope Street have been constructed.

Cable diversions for Manx Utilities across Apostles Bridge have also been finished.

During recent poor weather the new demountable floodgates provided by the Department of Infrastructure were installed at the end of Back Hope Street and the access lanes.

However, the water levels were not high enough to reach them.

A road closure on Bridge Street last week was an integral part of the scheme, and has allowed the contractor to make the necessary service connections within the highway.

The road reopened on Saturday.
