A former Anglican church in Douglas has been bought for the sum of £200,000.
All Saints’ Church on Alexandra Drive, Douglas, ceased to be used as a church in May 2017, after it was discovered major renovations were required, and has been sold by the church through estate agents Black Grace Cowley.
The building as it stands today was opened on April 20, 1967, and was arguably one of the most startling and impressive structures in Douglas at that time.
It replaced a previous church, which had opened in July 1898 which had been built with a corrugated iron exterior. It did not fare well in the Manx weather and had to be rebuilt entirely.
The estate agent’s posting for the building describes it as a ’unique opportunity to purchase a former place of worship’, complete with ’stunning vaulted ceilings’, a 108 foot main auditorium, kitchen, vestibule and vestry.
It is not known who the new owners are or their plans for the building, however as it is a registered building, those options will likely be limited to largely internal alterations.
The former Methodist church in Ramsey on Waterloo road is also for sale with Black Grace Cowley, built in 1845. It is also available for about £200,000 but it is not a registered building.
