The former Castletown fire station could be set to become a nano brewery if planners support an application by the town’s Commissioners.

The local authority has joined forces with craft beer makers Bottle Monkey to put forward plans for a nano brewery and community space for the former station on Farrants Way.

A nano brewery is a small brewery that produces up to 200 litres per batch.

If the plan is approved, it is hoped Bottle Monkey would also be able to run brewing workshops.

Castletown Commissioners said it hoped that the option of a head brewer being able to run the workshops would attract people who wish to make their own brew, ’couples wishing to produce a special brew for their wedding’ and for company team building days.

If the plans go ahead, the former lecture room at the first station will be used for brewing.

And the rest of the building would be used for community pop up events.

Part of the changes detailed in the application would see the roller shutter doors being replaced, in one instance with another roller shutter door, but with the other being replaced by full height glazing and a glazed double door.

A new sign will also be added to the front of the building.

A low level wall to the side of the building will also be removed to provide better sight lines and access to the building.

Part of the outside will be used for deliveries and parking, however the application added that the commissioners plan to use part of the space for community parking and it advised that there are two public car parks nearby.

The partnership with Bottle Monkey was established following an invitation for expressions of interest in 2018.

The building was purchased by the commissioners after it closed in 2017 when services moved to the new station at Ronaldsway industrial estate.
