The island’s cathedral invited the public in for a special day of mini golf, paper plane competitions and crafts.
It was planes, pews and pulpits at St German’s Cathedral in Peel at the weekend, with a variety of age groups coming in to play on the custom made mini golf course - based on island attractions - or getting their paper planes to soar right across the main hall of the historic building.
A hand bell ringing session also took place with crafts for younger people and refreshments available.
The concept behind the day is to show that the building is ’a religious space, but also a shared ground’, said Kevin Christian, a trustee of the Cathedral Quarter Trust.
’It’s something which adds to what we’re trying to do in terms of philosophy. To create effectively a destination on the island.
’In Peel there’s nowhere you would call a community hub.
’We want people to know they can come along to sit and talk - to know that the cathedral is a community space.’
The cathedral is continuing to be regenerated with its gardens having been landscaped to follow the story of Christianity in the island.
There are plans to have under floor heating and a cafe.
It’s hoped this will encourage the public to use the space for exhibitions and performances as well as other social initiatives.
The Cathedral is open daily from 9am to 6pm.
