A former chairman of Castletown Town Commissioners who supported his community for years has lost his battle with Covid-19.
Derek Cain, who was described by many as a ’gentle giant’ with a ’brilliant’ sense of humour, died in Abbotswood Nursing Home in Ballasalla on Tuesday (April 21).
Tributes have been paid to the retired pharmacist who was a member of Castletown Commissioners for 30 years before standing down in April 2008.
The 88-year-old leaves behind his wife Melville whom he married 61 years ago, his son and daughter and five grandchildren as well as other extended family members.
His family told the Manx Independent: ’Derek was cheeky and charming, a beloved member of his town and a long time supporter of his community through his work in Castletown Commissioners and his term as chairman.
’He will be sorely missed.’
The Commissioners posted on its Facebook page: ’The commissioners were saddened to learn of the death of Derek Cain.
’Our thoughts are with Mr Cain’s family.
’The flags at the town hall have been lowered as a mark of respect.’
The post gained a number of comments from those who knew Mr Cain.
Former Castletown commissioner and MHK Richard Ronan wrote: ’Very sad news, my thoughts very much with Derek’s family.
’I served with Derek on the board of Castletown Commissioners when I was elected in 2004.
Sad loss
’He was so good to me and gave some very early solid advice which I was so grateful.
’What I remember most was his brilliant humour, a very sad loss to our town.’
Another person wrote: ’I cared for this gentleman for a year, such a gentle giant. Much love to his wife.’ Others also described him as a ’caring boss’ and ’lovely man’.
A funeral will be held for Mr Cain on April 30.
â?¢ Eileen Cubbon (nee Holmes), aged 88, of Castletown, also died from coronavirus at Abbotswood.
She died peacefully last Thursday (April 16).
