A visually-grasping display of geometric art work inspired by religion and mythology have gone on display.
Entitled ’Bearings’, Sarah Brown has unveiled her collection of mathematically-crafted artwork at Mother T’s community gallery, Laxey.
Most of the work has been created over the past three years, during which Sarah, who creates under the name of Sarah L. Shenanigans, underwent a series of life changing events, including undergoing treatment for breast cancer and mental health issues.
Sarah used art therapy during her treatment. That led to her discovering something which has fundamentally inspired the way she creates her art work.
’I have to be thankful for everything I have been through, as it was undergoing chemotherapy at Clatterbridge hospital that I went through the art therapy course there,’ said Sarah.
’Art Therapy really helped to release a lot of my demons.
’From that, I went to study Islamic and Celtic Geometry at the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in Shoreditch, London, where I discovered that I had aphantasia, meaning I had no mental imagery.
’I can’t picture things in my head, which is why I have always struggled to draw things with light and shade or in 3D.’
’It suits me far better, as an aphantasiac, to draw geometric shapes, as I don’t know what they look like until I finish them.
’All of my art is created using a compass and ruler. One thing I did want to do is to figure out a geometrically-perfect Three legs of Mann.
’No one seems to know how to do them anymore without the aid of computer software, so I sat down and let the compass figure it out.’
This is Sarah’s first solo exhibition as a full-time artists, although she has contributed to several on-island open exhibitions .
’Bearings’ will be open to view between Thursdays to Saturdays, from 10pm to 4pm, and from 12pm.
