Clubs, societies, groups, classes and any other excuse for a social or artistic gathering are being encouraged to take part in a weekend dedicated to encouraging people to find out what is on their doorstep.
The Isle of Man Arts Council and Culture Vannin are teaming up to host a full two days of activities and events which will show people what types of clubs and societies exist in our towns and villages and how they can get involved, find out more or even take up a new hobby.
The ’On Your Doorstep’ weekend will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15 at venues all over the island, with four hubs in St Paul’s Hall, Ramsey, the Peel Centenary Centre the Villa Marina Arcade, in Douglas and the Castletown Civic Centre.
The public can drop in to these hubs during the day and find out about joining a local arts or cultural society, meet like-minded people, discover a festival or entertainment venue, learn Manx or get involved with an artistic hobby they’d never thought of trying out before.
Chloe Woolley, from Culture Vannin, said that, while they have many clubs and groups involved already, they would still like to hear from any other organisations or individual who think they would like to take part.
’We are still appealing for other groups, clubs, societies and other practitioners of whatever they do, to come forward, tell us about themselves, register and get involved,’ said Chloe.
’This weekend will also be a great way for businesses to spread the word about themselves.
’If you run a small dance school or are an independent music teacher for example, or anyone who holds classes like that on a small commercial basis, this will give you the chance to meet people and show what they can do or offer.
’They are also able to hold their event or taster session over the weekend.
’It is a great opportunity to open their doors and offer a taster session for the day, or a discounted service, or whatever they would like.
’We are also asking any music or arts festivals to use this weekend to promote themselves and let people know what’s going on.
’It is a good excuse to get your flyers out to people and let them know where you are and what is going on around the island.’
She added: ’The idea of the "On Your Doorstep" weekend is that we want to get people out of the house and see what’s around them, and hopefully get people to join and take part in some of the great activities on offer around the island.’
Culture Vannin will also be hosting an evening concert at the Peel Centenary Centre, and would like to hear from venues who would consider holding a similar event. More information is available from iomarts.com
