Roll on up for a lego challenge.

Autism Initiatives are holding the event on Tuesday (September 5) at St Paul’s Church Hall, Ramsey.

The first challenge starts at 10am and participants are encouraged to be there by 9.45am.

Lego originally invented in the 1940s is a popular game with both adults and children and has the advantage of appealing to those that are technically minded.

While some people enjoy the following of detailed instructions in their designs, others enjoy being more imaginative and creative. The Lego Challenge is to provide a fun social and interaction day where both these elements are incorporated.

A spoesman said while this event is aimed at children and adults with autism and related social communication difficulties, such as Asperger’s Syndrome, entrance is open to everyone, children, adults and families alike, ’as we aim to create a family fun day out for all who take part.’

Much more than simply playing with Lego bricks, the Lego challenge will include the presence of staff from Autism Initiatives, who will guide the entrants and encourage them to address and resolve tasks and problems. They will also be available to offer advice to people who may wish to learn more about autism.

Fiona Leece a registered manager with Autism initiatives said "Through the LEGO challenge it is hoped participants can learn in a safe environment to communicate with others, express their feelings, to think in a three dimensional way and to develop their motor skills and problem-solving skills, as well as organisation and construction skills, and to be able to develop a relationship with others and the world around them."

Exciting prizes for the successful entrants include the latest Lego kits, a 14 inch family Pizza provided by Pizza Nista and prizes donated from Jacks Toy shop

Participants must bring their own Lego with them, which will stay on their own building station throughout the competition. There will be two separate Lego challenges, each lasting up to two hours and people can either enter one or both of the competitions. There will also be two separate classes, one for ’the ’Pro’s’ and the other as ’family fun.’ People can also enter as individuals or team events of up to four people, which can consist of both children and adults. Children under the age of 12 years attending the event must be accompanied by an adult.

Refreshments will be available to buy on the day and the event will also include stalls, colouring competitions and face painting.

As numbers on the day may be limited, people wishing to take part are advised to book their place in advance. If you would like to join the Lego Challenge, you can get an application form from Fiona Leece on 484664 or [email protected]. Entrance is £1 for both participants and observers.

Fiona said people can also turn up on the day.
