The official launch took place today of the newly-restored Groudle Glen water wheel and wheelhouse.
The restoration by Laxey-based global mining machinery company MMD returns the landmark closer to its original 1895 design.
It was carried out to commemorate MMD’s founders, Ann and Alan Potts.
Many challenges were encountered during the water wheel’s restoration. In particular, the company was determined to preserve its historical accuracy whilst salvaging as many original parts as possible.
Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney unveiled a plaque to officially open the wheel this lunchtime.
MMD’s group managing director Martin Vorster said: ’Groudle Glen is one of the jewels of the Isle of Man, and we are truly proud of the
central part we have played in restoring its water wheel and wheelhouse to impeccable Victorian condition.’
