The Manx Music, Speech and Dance Festival has a new chairman.

Eric Quirk was elected to the position at the group’s annual general meeting, succeeding Sarah Kelly, who has stepped down after three years in the role.

Mr Quirk, a former head teacher of Marown School and pastoral assistant, competed in the Guild in his youth, before becoming a steward of the competition.

He said: ’There is an enduring popularity of the Guild in the Manx music and drama calendar. It has certainly been an important fixture for five generations of our family and continues to give us an immense amount of pleasure.

’A couple of years ago, a friend suggested I might enjoy being a steward. At first, I was rather hesitant but I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

’In our younger days, my wife Catherine and I both performed, as did our daughter and as do four of our grandchildren. I am proud to admit that all their achievements were and are far more noteworthy than my own. Nowadays I still participate as a member of Musicale.

’When I was asked to consider standing as chairman I gave it careful consideration. The Guild has given my family much enjoyment over many years so I was happy to offer my services and, in some small way, repay the debt of gratitude I owe.’

He added: ’Sarah’s energetic and committed efforts have led to a number of innovations and helped take the Guild forward in recent years.’

’I am looking forward to building on her achievements and thrilled to be working with a team of people who love the Guild and have far more experience than me as to how it works.

The Guild is sponsored by Dandara, which will continue to sponsor the competition until at least 2020.
