A woman who resisted arrest after being found half naked mid-morning in the centre of Douglas has been fined.

The court listing referred to Peter John Kaneen, of Peel Road, Douglas, but the court heard the 20-year-old was transgender and asked to be identified as Mathea Lace.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how police were called to Finch Road on November 16 at 11.25am after reports of Lace being naked apart from a hooded top.

When officers arrived she had been brought into one of the offices there.

Lace refused to engage with police and was said to be smelling of alcohol.

She became abusive and was eventually asked to leave the office.

Her aggressive behaviour continued and she was subsequently arrested but resisted, locking her arms and shouting: ‘no’.

She kicked out at fire extinguishers and doors in the office striking one police officer in the chest area.

Lace’s abuse continued in a police van as she screamed obscenities.

At police headquarters she told police: ‘The only thing I can say is I don’t remember anything.’ The court heard that she had no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Stephen Wood said that his client was currently involved with a psychiatrist. ‘It is a straightforward resisting arrest,’ said Mr Wood. I would submit that this is an incident that has scared Ms Lace. This is the first time she has completely blacked out as a result of consuming alcohol. This is out of character, it is her first offence, the circumstances of which are massively embarrassing for her.

‘She said she was performing at Quids Inn and was relatively sober when she left. She went to Bordellos and consumed more alcohol, then ended up in a flat somewhere and doesn’t know what was consumed in the flat.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ‘You struggled violently with police who were attempting to help you. The fact you were so intoxicated and you lost control in the way you did is an aggravating factor.’

Lace was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to two police officers and £125 costs.
