The Western Civic Amenity Site has been announced as a winner at tonight’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Awards For Excellence.

Fondly dubbed ‘Harrods of the West’ due to its unique collection of toys from the London department store, the amenity site will now also proudly display the Capital International Group Award for Protecting our Environment.

The award was presented to Mike Rose by Anthony Long after judges praised its efforts in spreading ‘important environmental messages’.

The WCAS is one of four independently run amenity sites in the island.

Its remit is to reduce costs and increase recycling without reducing service levels and an important of this has been educating the public about the need to increase recycling on the island.

After 10 years of the site’s education programme, its effectiveness has been seen as recycling and reuse have increased to an average of 70% for the last four years.

The site itself embarked on a green energy initiative in 2017. Other initiatives have included a WCAS scheme using electric vehicles and installing a filtered refill point on the old railway line.

The judges said WCAS ‘took important environmental messages to the public through a Recycling roadshow education trailer launched at this year’s Food and Drink Festival.’
