The team at the Chester Street vaccination hub delivered more than 900 booster vaccinations at the weekend.
It was after long queues formed on Saturday morning (December 18) down the length of Chester Street.
Ultimately, the team managed to get 948 jabs into arms on Saturday after hundreds of people took advantage of the walk-in session.
The government tweeted the achievement, thanking the team ’who are working hard to protect our community!’
The hub was closed on Sunday (December 19).
Yesterday (Monday), the government announced that top-up jabs are now available to all adults aged 18 and over who had their second dose three months ago.
It comes as a major expansion in the island’s rollout of booster jabs is underway in response to the new Omicron variant sweeping through the UK and around the world.
As a result, capacity at the hub has been expanded, with an additional 3,000 slots made available in the run up to Christmas Eve, in an effort to get as many booster vaccines into arms as possible.
The extra slots are in addition to existing appointments - those which have been booked by people online, and those sent out by letter.
Two separate entrances have now also been created in the hope this will streamline the process and allow booked appointments to take priority.
The left is for booked appointments and the right is for walk-ins.
Today (Tuesday), the hub will facilitate 1,000 booked appointments, with capacity to allow for up to 1,000 walk-in places.
On Wednesday, there are 700 booked appointments and capacity for 900 walk-ins, whilst on Thursday and Friday there are 300 booked appointments and space for 350 walk-ins on each day.
The government has stressed that protecting the population from serious illness caused by Covid-19 as the Omicron variant brings another wave of infections, and protecting already stretched health and care services are now urgent priorities.
By topping-up immunity with a booster, island residents can protect themselves, their loved ones and the wider community against the continuing pandemic.
Last week, the Minister for Health and Social Care, Lawrie Hooper MHK, said: ’We are upscaling the booster vaccination rollout at pace, to get ahead of an expected surge in Omicron cases and avoid the extra demand this will place on our health and other essential services.
’I thank all the staff who have volunteered to work extra hours to get jabs into arms, and many others across government who have volunteered to help in a range of admin roles, as without them the programme cannot proceed.
’It is a busy time of year for everyone, and the efforts of all involved in helping us increase capacity so swiftly in the run-up Christmas are much appreciated.’
He added: ’I urge everyone eligible for a booster to come forward and have it. If people take up the offer, we could vaccinate everyone from the age of 40 upwards before Christmas.’
