A public consultation has been launched on government plans to make financial support available for people living with long-term health conditions to adapt their homes and continue living independently.

The Department of Infrastructure is looking at providing means-tested grants or loans of up to £30,000, or £50,000 in cases of exceptional need, following clinical recommendation.

The money could be used to buy equipment or make adaptations to a person’s home, such as platform lifts, wet rooms or garage conversions.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK said: ’The department recognises the importance of a good quality of life and appreciates that those with long-term health conditions wish to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible.

’I understand the benefit of adapting our residents’ homes to meet their needs, and feel strongly that everyone should be enabled to enjoy a good standard of life.’

The consultation invites comments on the DoI’s proposed House Improvement (Adaptions) Scheme 2018 before the scheme is finalised and taken forward for approval by Tynwald.
