A heart and fitness programme unique to the island will start at the Southern Community Initiatives’ Hub, in Port Erin, in September.

From September 20, it will offer British Association for Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation phase four classes.

Classes will involve two 90 minute sessions per week: Saturday, 11am to 1pm and Wednesday, 6.30pm to 8pm.

An introductory evening takes place on Wednesday, September 13 from 6.30pm for people to find out more.

Mandine Wilson, a phase four fitness trainer, said: ’We will be following a similar protocol and program to the Noble’s Hospital cardiac rehabilitation sessions.

’This community-based phase four exercise programme will provide support to not only people who have completed the Noble’s Hospital phase three cardiac rehabilitation course, but also had cardio vascular disease and those at risk of developing CVD.

’Sedentary, unfit, overweight and able elderly people may also benefit as they progress towards greater self-responsibility for their wellness. To encourage lifestyles that include exercise for the whole family, we also invite a supportive family member to join the phase four sessions.’

The phase four sessions are being sponsored by the island branch of the British Heart Foundation.

The charity’s chairman, John Bourbon, said: ’In offering the next valuable link to assist patients who want to continue their managed recovery following what can have been a life changing experience, we hope this pilot in association with the Southern Community Initiative can be replicated through similar projects across the island.’’

Hub co-ordinator Janet Bridle said: ’We have found, in particular with the 55 plus age group, that exercising in a social group is very effective. The participants attend regularly, meet like-minded people who are facing similar challenges and are motivated to do the classes and the recommended exercises.
