Manx National Heritage’s Heritage Open Days event is returning for its 12th year, promising to be a celebration of the abundant heritage and culture in the island.

It’s all free to enjoy and open to all the family, with a mix of new places and spaces opening their doors along with the return of firm favourites from previous years.

All events this year can be booked onto ahead of time unless otherwise stated, and as the guided tours have limited places, Manx National Heritage (MNH) are recommending those interested make sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

Bookings open tomorrow, Wednesday, at midday.

This year’s highlights include a rare glimpse inside the former Castletown residence of Captain Quilliam, a guided stroll around the pubs on Douglas Quay and a guided tour of Peel Castle with a difference - hearing about the people who lived their lives within its ancient walls.

The tour of Captain Quilliam’s property is described as: ’A rare opportunity to take a tour around this significant Castletown property, once occupied by Captain Quilliam who served at the Battle of Trafalgar. Each tour will be introduced briefly by Blue Badge Guide Helen Leigh, followed by free time to look around.’

This tour will last approximately one hour.

Heritage Open Days are funded and co-ordinated by MNH and delivered by a host of individuals and volunteers from across the heritage sector.

MNH describe the event as ’your opportunity to discover hidden spots, try out new experiences and celebrate the island’s outstanding heritage.’

Other events being hosted this year include a behind the scenes look at library and archives conservation, a natural history collection guided tour at the Manx Museum, a look at Maughold’s early Christian monastery with Blue Badge guide Marinda Faragher, vintage vehicle running days with Jurby Transport Museum, a Niarbyl Folklore Tour with Culture Vannin, a guided tour of King William’s College and tour of Braddan Cemetery.

MNH said: ’The knowledge and enthusiasm of the remarkable hosts and guides who give up their time for free to inspire, educate and highlight the diverse history, culture and architecture of the Isle of Man is tremendous and we thank them and you for your support and involvement.’

Understandably this year’s line up has been designed to keep participants and organisers safe in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Measures in place include:

l Smaller tour sizes so they can facilitate social distancing

l Hand washing and/or hand gel stations available

l Face masks are being welcomed

l There are more outdoor events

Those wishing to take part in this year’s events are being asked to help MNH to keep everyone safe by not attending any Heritage Open Day events if they feel unwell with Covid related symptoms.
