Audiences have been left rolling in the aisles following the genuinely hilarious antics of a green ogre, a talking donkey and an entitled prince with one or two ’little’ issues.
The cast of Douglas Choral Union’s production of ’Shrek: The Musical’, currently running at the Gaiety Theatre, may have been made to wait a little while longer than planned, but they certainly didn’t hold back once they made it onto the stage.
Riotously funny and pitch-perfect performances from main characters and dazzling song and dance set pieces made for one of the most enjoyable nights at the theatre I can remember for a long time.
The play largely followed the plot of the famous first Shrek film, with a few extra scenes and embellishments thrown in for good measure, and featured Iain Dixon as the cantankerous ogre who is tasked to rescue a princess from a fire-breathing dragon.
Iain was great as the fed up and angry beast and the pairing of him and Jonathan Sleight as the donkey was a treat to watch.
Jonathan was wonderful to watch, a constant, irrepressible comedic figure who gave a great impersonation of Eddie Murphy, who played the role in the film, when he needed to and brought his own energy and humour into the role. They were both great to watch and held together the mammoth production superbly.
However, nothing could quite prepare you for the sight and spectacle of Lorcan O’Mahony’s Lord Farquad.
Having to spend the entire two and half hours on his knees and sporting a fake pair of tiny legs to reduce him to the requisite height, Lorcan gave a performance of such mesmerizing energy and hilarity that you couldn’t stop laughing when he was one. It was genuinely genius and sidesplittingly funny performance.
Dandi Dancox, along with understudy Lauren Molyneux, more than held her own as the fiesty Fiona, living a dual life as a beautiful Princess by day and an ogre by night, joined by Scarlett Clague and Milie Christian, alternating as a teenage Fiona and nine-year-olds Lowenna Joughin and Cristl Stitt as the young Fiona. Shrek: The Musical is on at the Gaiety tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow night. Make sure you catch it as it is one of the funniest play I have ever seen and one that is genuinely worth the wait.
