How are your Manx tans coming along?
It has been a record-breaking hot month with the highest temperature achieved at Ronaldsway being 27.5°C on Wednesday (June 27), which is the warmest June day ever recorded.
We went to Strand Street in Douglas to ask residents how they’ve been coping in the hot conditions.
Agniezka Arthur and her daughter Bella, aged 40 and seven, from Tromode, have been making the most out of the sunshine.
’It’s brilliant weather! I love it,’ said Agniezka. ’I’ve lived here 13 years and it’s never been like this in June before.
’We will be going to the Calf of Man on Saturday (June 30) and we have been out camping and watching the sunsets and the moon, which are stunning at the moment. Hopefully the sun will last for the rest of summer.
’The cat is struggling though. I ran a bath for him and he actually enjoyed it! I was so shocked.
’He’s 12 and he doesn’t generally like having a bath, I give him one every now and then, but because of the weather he did.’
Her daughter added: ’When it’s hot I like to hang out with my friend and go in our sprinkler.’
Henry Blackburn, aged 32, from Port St Mary, said: ’I’m not coping very well. I’ve been working outside doing some digging [near Kirk Michael] as part of the "Round Mounds of the Isle of Man" project.’
When asked what he does to combat the rays, he replied: ’I use sun cream and drink lots of water, but it’s difficult to get water up there as it’s not very accessible and there’s no shelter there either. We could do with a gazebo.
’There’s not been any casualties from the sun so far, but there was a woman who had collapsed outside Starbucks half an hour ago.’
He added: ’I definitely have a Manx tan.’
Laura Pigott, 21, who is from Mount Murray, but studies drama in London, said: ’The weather is fine. I haven’t been out that much due to working in an office, but if I get time I would go to the beach.
’My mum plays golf for ladies in Peel and they had to go indoors because the heat made them so knackered. I’ve seen some people out running in this weather and think "how are they doing that?".’
Karen and Rob White, 63 and 61, from Playa del Rey in Los Angeles, were visiting the island via a cruise ship.
’We’re very lucky with the weather, but I think we might have brought it over with us.’ Rob laughed.
His wife said: ’This is pleasant for us, but we’ve overhead some people here saying it’s hot.’
Rob continued: ’On the coast of Los Angeles it can get to 80°F (27°C).’
When asked for tips on how to survive the hot weather they recommended wearing shorts, unlike Dave Kneale, our photographer, and me.
Lewis Christian, 23, from Ramsey, said: ’I’m Manx and we’re not used to it as a Spaniard would be. It’s nice though. We’re allowed to dress in shorts. We normally wear a shirt and pants, but the company has just changed it.’
His friend, Eden Shields, also aged 23 from Ramsey, said: ’The weather’s fine, I can’t complain. The office is pretty warm, but I have a fan at work and can open the windows.’
