One hundred and fifty people enjoyed a talk by Professor Hugh Davidson MBE gave a talk about women’s internment in Port St Mary and Port Erin during the Second World War.
The Manx Blind Welfare Society authors’ breakfast gave guests an insight into how locals and internees lived together, encircled by a barbed wire perimeter
Prof Davidson said why most internees wanted Britain to win the war and explained how the camp was run by Manx landladies.
The talk, held at the Mount Murray Golf Club, was based on ’Friend or Foe?’, a book recently released and written over a four-year period by seven members of Rushen Heritage Trust, one of whom is Hugh Davidson.
Six of the authors were able to attend the event and answer questions put to them by the audience.
Manx Blind Welfare Society volunteers’ coordinator and events organiser Debbie Thomson said: ’We are delighted with the feedback we’ve received for this year’s authors’ breakfast.
’We had another great turnout and it was lovely to see both old and new faces enjoy the delicious breakfast and hear Hugh’s fascinating talk.
’I’d like to say a huge thank you to Hugh for stepping in, and his fellow authors. The Lexicon Bookshop was also very accommodating in helping us to secure him .
’The funds that were raised through tickets sales and the raffle will be used towards continuing to provide support and services to more than 500 blind and visually impaired people in the Isle of Man.’
