Island businessman Trevor Hemmings shares the disappointment of many Manx punters after his three entries in the Grand National failed to finish.

Well-fancied grey Vintage Clouds fell at the first fence, Lake View Lad pulled up at the 27th and Warriors Tale called it a day at the 28th.

Mr Hemmings told Business News: ‘It was one of the most disappointing days I’ve ever had at the Grand National.’

But he had nothing but praise for the winner of the Aintree race, Tiger Roll, saying: ‘He was superb.’

Race favourite Tiger Roll, owned by Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary and trained by Gordon Elliott, has now had back-to-back victories, ridden by Davy Russell.

Mr Hemmings said he immediately congratulated Mr O’Leary who then reminded Mr Hemmings that both men have now had three winners apiece in the famous jumps race. Mr Hemmings has won the race with Hedgehunter (2005), Ballabriggs (2011) and Many Clouds (2015). Mr O’Leary has now won twice with Tiger Roll and once with Rule the World in 2016.

Mr Hemmings said he now plans to run Vintage Clouds in next Saturday’s Scottish National at Ayr.

Vintage Clouds is trained in Yorkshire by Sue Smith. Her husband, Harvey Smith, is reported to have said:‘The important thing is he is fine and he will go for the Scottish National now.’

Vintage Clouds was third in the Scottish race last year. Two years ago Paul Nicholls' Vicente, also running in Trevor Hemmings' colours, fell at the first in the Grand National. He then went on to win the Scottish National for the second year in a row after that fall. This year Vintage Clouds could follow in his footsteps. The nine-year-old grey, has run in the race twice before, finishing seventh behind Vicente in 2017 before coming in third in the race 12 months ago.
