The cost of disposing of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) at the eastern amenity site in Douglas has risen.

The rise in costs was announced by the eastern district civic amenity site joint committee which reported to Douglas Council this week.

The rises actually came into force on April.

The price rises for disposing of WEEE goods sees under-counter fridges up to 50KG will cost £15.

In addition, chest fridge/freezers up to 100kg will cost £27, the larger American-style fridges will cost £50, TVs will cost £12, PC monitors and laptops will cost £6 each.

The committee, which compromises members from Douglas Council, as well as representatives from Onchan, Braddan and Gaff commissioners.

Also revealed is that the committee rejected a request from the Department of Social Care which sought free use of the site when disposing of waste from clients.

It was agreed that allowing one section of a government department would create difficulties, so the department will have to pay.

Charities are also not going to be exempt from paying.

In a piece of good news for users of the site, it has been announced the site is fully operationally throughout the weekend without special disposal arrangements.
