The infrastructure minister has said a 20mph speed limit on South Quay, Douglas would be ’detrimental’.
Douglas Central MHK Ann Corlett asked at a House of Keys sitting last week if the government had given any consideration to a 20mph speed limit on the road with traffic calming measures.
Tim Crookall said no consideration had been given because the road cannot be classified as ’residential in character’.
He said: ’The quay’s primary role is to link Douglas harbour to the wider highway network and as such, it’s one of the few roads on the island identified as being suitable for articulated vehicles weighing up to 44 tonnes, or exceeding 14 metres.
’An implementation of any traffic calming measures would have a detrimental effect on some of the heavy good vehicles up and down there, so we would have to be very careful of what we looked at doing.
’We’ve had the odd complaint but we haven’t had that many.’
