A three-day planning inquiry hearing is taking place over proposals to construct sewage treatment works at a site near Peel.
The hearing concludes today (Thursday), but any decisions are unlikely to be announced for some time.
Manx Utilities wants to get the green light to erect the plant at Glenfaba House by the Raggatt, but has been met with opposition from Patrick Commissioners, the local authority for the area.
Discussion is taking place on issues ranging from the environmental effects on biodiversity and water quality, the impact on traffic in the area, noise, smell, and the visual impact of the works - as well as whether another site could be considered.
Independent planning inspector Brian Sims is appearing via video link from the UK and hearing arguments from both sides before making his closing recommendations on Thursday.
The chairman of Patrick Commissioners, John Anderson, who is also a neighbouring farmer of the land at Glenfaba House, says that the virtual arrangements should not pose too many problems, adding: ’Thankfully were are able to meet as a group on the island here, and the majority of speakers are in one room.
’For the three people off the island, they are used to it now.’
He has acknowledged the decision to accept or reject the Manx Utilities plan rests with the government, saying: ’I feel confident that we can have a good discussion and hopefully people will listen to the various contributions people make.
’Ultimately I suppose it’s up to the council of ministers to make that decision.
’I think the inspector will listen to what we’ve got to say and he’ll make his recommendations no doubt, but ultimately yes, it’s up to our ministers to decide.’
