The Isle of Man features in a new book written by Liverpool resident Allison Jones.
Largely autobiographical, the book describes Mrs Jones’s life working in a variety of jobs while living in the island for more than 10 years and it also includes some scenic shots of parts of the island, such as Peel Castle.
It also describes how she discovered the man she took to be her father was not, and her eventual meeting, back in the UK, with her biological father.
’’I came to the Isle of Man when I was 17 and stayed until I was 30,’ she said.
’I still go back regularly because I know lots of people that I met through work.’
During her time in the island, she lived in Peel and worked in several pubs in the town, including the Creek and the Marine Hotel, as well as getting a job in the Isle of Man prison, then at Victoria Road in Douglas.
She was also engaged to bemarried to a Manxman but the relationship ended.
The book, which is a slim volume of 120-odd pages written under the pen name Ivy Rose, was published at the first attempt.
’I’d heard it was hard to get as book published,’ she said.
’But I submitted the manuscript to three and had a "yes"off all three of them.’
She hit on the idea of moving to the Isle of Man after coming here on holiday with her family between the ages of seven and 14.
’We used to visit with my uncle in the school holidays, sometimes staying at the Eagle Hotel in Port Erin,’ she said.
She moved back to the UK nine years ago and now has a husband, 13-year-old stepson and two daughters aged 16 and five.
’I think the book opens up the debate about nature and nurture and it also is a personal account of the crisis I had on finding I was adopted,’ she said.
She didn’t want to go into detail about the title, Ronald Ratt, but said it was an oblique reference to her real father.
The book is available on Amazon as an e-book at £3.61 or as hard copy at £8.95.
