Six teenagers from the island have completed a wilderness expedition of the Arctic Circle in kayaks.
The team experienced wild camping, washing in glacial meltwater, fishing for dinner and challenging weather conditions on their Youth Scholarship Expedition to the northernmost parts of Norway.
For nine nights Jack Crowe and Elsie Hyett, both aged 15, Luke Crowe, 17, Lizzie Jones, Fergus Lole and Elizabeth Lole, all aged 18, explored islands, fjords, mountains and glaciers off the city of Tromso.
The team are members of Adventurous Experiences’ Junior Paddlesport programme.
They were invited to join the scholarship programme which is entirely funded by the outdoor activities organisation.
They were led by Becky Crease, 32, and the owner of Adventurous Experiences, Keirron Tastagh, 40.
Keirron said: ’The team were encouraged to explore and challenge their physical and metaphorical limitations throughout the expedition.
’We are extremely proud of what they continue to accomplish.’
Becky, who is part of the Adventurous Experiences’ coaching team and is working towards her British Canoeing advanced water leadership and coaching award, said: ’The team were amazing!
’It was so good to share this rewarding time with people who have so much to give.’
She added it was particularly great to share in their awe of the scale of their natural surroundings, appreciate the priorities of food, water and shelter together, plus gain a ’deeper environmental understanding’ of the landscape they encountered.
One day while fishing for mackerel from sea kayaks a pod of porpoises greeted them.
They also got to watch eagles fly overhead before reaching shore to cook what they had caught.
Every morning the team completed a beach and coast plastic clean-up from camp.
The youth scholarship team later gave a presentation of their trip, thanking the coaching team, parents, and those in Norway who provided the expedition kayaks and local knowledge.
