Ramsey resident Hazel Drury is set to make her second appearance on Channel 4 quiz show Countdown on Wednesday, October 21.
The 29-year-old, who was born in Preston and spent her childhood in County Leitrim, Ireland, first appeared on the programme at the age of 18, when she won four consecutive shows.
During her earlier run, presenter Rachel Riley gave her the nickname ‘the baby-faced assassin’.
Hazel’s interest in the long-running quiz began during after-school visits to her grandparents, where the family were encouraged to play along together.
She was diagnosed with severe dyslexia at 15, followed by autism and Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) at 18.
Hazel’s mum, Jane Carmichael, commented: ‘Hazel has noticed both her reading and processing speeds have improved significantly, which she attributes to playing Countdown, particularly the conundrums.
‘She has always been fiercely determined to succeed and constantly challenges herself, and has also completed a B.A. in Geography and Nua-Ghaeilge (Irish) and an M.A. in Geography.
‘Hazel works for Kestrel Insurance in a client support role, and is grateful to Kestrel for believing in her and giving her the opportunity to demonstrate what she is capable of.
‘She is also a member of the Manx Scrabble Club and is currently learning beginners conversational Manx.’
Countdown, which combines number puzzles, word games and general knowledge, has been a fixture of British television since its launch in 1982. Contestants compete across a series of timed rounds, testing their vocabulary, mental arithmetic and quick thinking.
Her latest appearance will see her return to the Countdown studio in the hope of securing one of the programme’s coveted teapot trophies.
Viewers can watch Hazel compete on Channel 4 on Wednesday, October 21 at 2.10pm, or can catch up through the All 4 streaming app.
