The Isle of Man Photographic Society was delighted to welcome Dr Pat Tutt Dip Arch, RIBA, ARPS, CPAGB, PhD from the Western Society as the ideal judge for our latest assignment competition.
She is clearly highly qualified in several areas, particularly architecture and photography, as well as the author and photographer of several books including a study of Lorne House and one on Manx architecture (a follow-up to her PhD).
The assignment was on the subject of ’Record’, a niche sector in photography aimed at excellence of technique in which the subject item (e.g. jewellery, buildings, church windows or statues) is shown in great detail, often with subdued lighting to reveal shape, texture and grain rather than strong lighting which may lead to dense shadows and concealed detail.
The competition of more than 70 entries covered both prints and digital images, with competition particularly intense in the advanced class.
Pat provided an excellent commentary, her thoughts on each image demonstrating the serious consideration each had received and a keen awareness of the skills needed - plus the added input of her own, very obvious knowledge or research into each subject.
After due thought, her choice as to the best in competition went to an image of Rochester Cathedral by Jeremy Broome-Smith - a beautifully detailed architectural shot of the nave, the harmonious colours of the stonework and the interior providing a lovely ambience and serenity to the image.
The society meets at the Art Society Building (Thie Ellyn) in Withington Road, Douglas, with all meetings starting at 7.30pm.
Our next meeting on Wednesday, January 24, will include a presentation by Jeremy Broome-Smith on ’macro-photography’ - the skills and specialist techniques needed for close-up imaging.
Meetings are open to the public, and all will be given a very warm welcome. Full details of our programme can be found on our website at www.iomps.com.
