A section of road in Laxey will be closed for a month to allow for the emergency demolition of a property that was evacuated following a dramatic landslide in 2023.

Independent structural and geotechnical engineers have advised that Cliffmount needs to be demolished in a controlled manner to make the site safe.

This follows ground movement affecting the property and the slope below.

Cliffmount was one of two homes evacuated following a landslide above the southern end of Laxey Promenade on March 14, 2023.

Old Laxey Hill will be closed to through traffic from next Monday, September 28 until Monday, October 26.

Demolition works are planned to take place from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm.

The road may be reopened earlier if engineers confirm that it is safe to do so.

Speaking in 2023, then Garff MHK Daphne Caine accused the government of ‘washing its hands’ of the landslip and said the households that had been forced to evacuate felt ‘very let down’.

A letter from the Attorney General’s chambers setting out the government’s position said it was an issue for the landowners and their respective insurers to resolve.

During the demolition, signed diversion routes will be in place.

Pedestrian access will be maintained for essential residential access.

The upper and lower footpaths adjacent to the site will also be closed for safety.

Bus Vannin will advise of any changes to local services.

Garff Commissioners said they appreciate that works will cause some disruption and have thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while the essential safety works are carried out.

It said the demolition is being undertaken as essential safety works, and efforts will be made to minimise noise, dust and vibration.

Residents with specific access requirements, including carers, deliveries, mobility needs or medical appointments, are asked to contact the site team in advance so arrangements can be made.
