An ‘isolated passive incident’ involving a small number of prisoners is taking place at the Isle of Man Prison today (Tuesday), the Department of Home Affairs has confirmed.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed to Isle of Man Today that the incident was ongoing at the prison in Jurby and involved a ‘small number’ of prisoners.

The department said it could not comment further on ongoing incidents for ‘security reasons’.

Reports circulating on social media suggest some prisoners are taking part in a protest.

It is understood the reported action may be linked to the amount of time prisoners are spending in their cells because of staffing levels, although this has not been confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs.

The nature of the incident and what prompted it remain unclear.

Isle of Man Today has approached the Department of Home Affairs for further comment.
