Disney’s classic canine caper ’Lady and the Tramp’ has been transformed by a Laxey Based dance company.
Dancer’s Barre will bring their show, called ’A Tramp’s Tale’, to the Gaiety Theatre stage on Sunday, May 28.
The production will feature a cast of over 80 dancers between the ages of 4 to 19, and will see them perform a number of dance routines that will tell the story of the lovable scruffy mutt Tramp and his friendship with Lady, a very well-to-do spaniel.
Dancer’s Barre is a small dance group, who hold shows every two years at the theatre. Rachel Withington, who runs the group, said that the group have been rehearsing for the show since before Christmas.
’The whole group have been working on this since November,’ said Rachel.
’It is a huge thing for a small group like us to undertake.’
’This is no ordinary ballet school show, though. It is a unique dance experience with a full story throughout.
’Our story is based on Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. It follows the basic Disney story line right the way through, with a couple of added extras, because everyone wants a little part.’
All the dance pieces have been choreographed by Rachel and her team, with additional music, inspired by classical and swing, arranged by Illiam Quane.
Ealish Withington, a dancer at the Pointe Youth Dance Company in Manchester and sponsored by The Isle of Man Arts Council, plays the role of ’Tramp’, and Caragh Beynon plays ’Lady’.
Rachel said that the young dancers are excited at the thought of appearing at the Gaiety
’I think the adults, who will come on and do a couple of routines, are more nervous than the kids. The kids have a big sense of occasion.
I think that some of them have never been into the Gaiety, other have been with me for years & this will be their final show. The adrenaline, the tears and the excitement of just being in such a wonderful theatre is very important to them.
’That’s why I keep doing it. I am introducing these children into the world of the arts. They are the people of the future who will be involved with the Theatre and I think that it is really important they have this experience.’
There are two shows, at 2pm and at 7pm. Tickets are £15, with £12 for seniors and children, from the Villa Marina box office.
