Singer and songwriter Matt Kelly has been prolific over the last couple of years.

Since striking out solo three years ago, Matt has played an astonishing number of concerts, and has become one of the most ever-present, and indeed one of the most popular faces of the Manx music scene in recent years.

Now Matt has released his second album of original songs, ’Time For Matt Kelly’.

Featuring 15 compositions, the album features many songs that have become live favourites, and all of them feature Matt’s unique knack of crafting ordinary situations or random conversations into catchy and original music.

’It’s a bizarre thing where my music comes from, as I’m not really influenced by singers or songwriters,’ said Matt.

’It’s just come from me trying a few things out and singing over the top of it, and they usually end up being these short, bright folk-pop songs.

’Nothing I do is more than three minutes long. I’ve always liked how the Beatles have these short, tiny songs, and they are quick, over and gone.

’It also come from a lot of the other bands I’ve played with in the past, and stuff I’ve subliminally taken in over the past few years.’

Matt has played in many well-respected groups, such as the folk groups King Chiaullee and Strengyn, before striking out on his own.

’My songs are shorts stories, in a sense. ’High Society’ is a song about me being invited to a party way above my station, which is something I was inspired to write after being invited to these posh events with King Chiaullee.

’Stay tuned’ is about me manning a radio station for an afternoon and giving shout outs to all my friends, and ’Liverpool’ was written when it was the city of culture. They had slogans painted all over the town, like ’Do You care?’ There were loads of different ones painted all over. I took them all and made them into a song.

’I wrote the shark song for a friend who is a huge fan of sharks. We had this discussion about whether or not you could keep one as a pet, if you had a big enough swimming pool. They are just all funny stories.

’I’m nothing without a topic to write about, and I’m not into the idea about writing about the news or current topics. I just have fun ideas, write stories and make them into songs.’
